Quedlinburg — An Hour Away, Centuries Back
I had never heard of Quedlinburg until I found it on a list. One hour and a train ride later, I was walking through centuries of German history.
It started with a simple list I made out of curiosity: ten cities and towns I wanted to visit in Germany. Some names were obvious. I had heard about Hamburg and Potsdam before and already knew there was plenty to explore there. But then there was one name on the list that meant absolutely nothing to me — Quedlinburg.
I had never heard of it.
What made me even more curious was finding out that it was barely an hour away from where I live. So, naturally, I looked it up. The first few pictures were enough to get my attention: narrow streets, colourful timber-framed houses and buildings that looked like they belonged to another century. I remember thinking, how is a place like this so close to me and I have never even heard of it?
That was enough. I decided to go.
But when I finally explored Quedlinburg, I realised that those beautiful old houses were only the surface. Behind them was a much bigger story — and one I knew almost nothing about.
